your motive powered assets to improve your mobile equipment
fleet efficiency. |
Your
battery powered material handling equipment fleet’s
efficiency is dependent on the performance of the battery.
Lead acid batteries used on this equipment are often ignored
due to lack of available data, efforts involved and/or
cost associated to obtain such data.
Access Control Group, a technology leader in mobile equipment
management solutions recognized this inefficiency and
its impact on not just battery acquisition but also on
material handling equipment maintenance and productivity
of the facility.
Typical issues of battery fleet management are timely
watering and proper charging. Battery used with low or
no water can reduce its useful life. Over or undercharging
can cause harm to batteries and as a result useful life
is shortened. Undercharged batteries can cause equipment
motor to overload and it can cause serious damage to such
components.
Productivity is also affected by poor battery management.
When an undercharged battery is used, as operator starts
using equipment, battery will not be able to provide power
needed and equipment may go in to lift cutout mode. Equipment
must be brought back to charging area for battery replacement.
This problem is more prevalent in fast charge environment.
Another major issue in fast charge environment is false
indication of battery State of Charge (SoC). Most Battery
Discharge Indicators measure voltage which is not a true
indicator of available capacity. When battery is charged
during break or lunch, 15-30 minutes of charge may show
SoC as full but depletes quickly as used.
The solution is to employ battery monitor which can measure
true capacity in Ampere Hours. Other important parameters
to measure battery performance are voltage, water level,
and temperature. Cell Track, an advanced,
least invasive battery status monitor can provide this
vital information via PDA, serial port or on board gauge.
If our fleet management system
VigilantG2
is installed on your equipment, out of bound data can
be sent to a web based server. Email and on screen notification
will help you take proactive measures to minimize damage
and downtime. Reports on battery performance such as Exceptions,
PM scheduling, charge/discharge cycles, utilization etc.
can be created with our web based application, Assetor.
At your option but with no additional cost, you can schedule
these reports and alerts via email at desired frequency
so you don’t have to spend your time looking for
data.
Most corporations do not know or do not consider loss
of productivity due to inefficiency in battery management.
There is cascading effect on productivity and whether
such costs are apparent or not, it can impact your bottom
line.
